Kanye West is blasting Annie Leibovitz – who photographed the rapper and Kim Kardashian for their Vogue cover — for dropping out of shooting his wedding just one day before the nuptials.
The singer even admits he then spent four days of his honeymoon perfecting the official wedding photo.
“She was afraid of celebrity,” West says of Leibovitz on Tuesday during his surprise appearance at the Cannes Lions festival.
Despite the setback, the rapper refused to settle for anything but the best when it came to the picture that eventually became the most liked Instagram post in history.
“Let me tell you something about that kiss photo that my girl put up… This was pissing my girl off during the honeymoon,” explains West. “She was exhausted because we worked on the photo so much because Annie Leibovitz pulled out of the wedding, because I think she was scared of the idea of celebrity.”
“But I still wanted my wedding photos to look like Annie Leibovitz,” he adds.
West reveals spending “like four days” fixing the picture of himself kissing his new wife in front of a wall of roses at the Forte di Belvedere in Florence because the flowers were off-color.
“Now, can you imagine telling someone who just wants to Instagram a photo, the No. 1 person on Instagram, that we need to work on the color of the flowered wall?” he asks. “But the fact that the No. 1 most liked photo has this certain aesthetic on it was a win for what the mission is — of raising the palette.”
West notes that “when people think celebrity, which is the highest form of communication — we’re like walking networks or TV shows or brands in ourselves — you don’t think good taste.”
“And I believe that bad taste is vulgar,” he continues. “It’s like cursing. I think the world can be saved through design. Because what is the most distasteful thing someone can do? Kill someone. So, good taste is the opposite of that.”
