Chris Brown's Washington D.C. assault case will continue without the singer's presence.

According to the "Washington Post," a judge gave Chris permission to miss today's hearing, during which a trial date may be set.  His lawyer, Mark Geragos, will appear on his behalf.

Brown previously rejected a plea deal for the misdemeanor assault charge stemming from an altercation in the nation's capital last year.  He and a bodyguard are accused of hitting a man outside of a hotel.

While there are varying stories about how the altercation began, reports suggest it may have started over an attempt to interrupt a photo Chris was taking with some fans.  However, Brown's camp contends that the man tried to board his tour bus.

Chris Brown is currently at a residential treatment facility to work on his anger management issues.  A Los Angeles judge ordered him to rehab following his D.C. assault charge.

Recently prosecutors asked a judge to place him behind bars for violating his probation in the 2009 Rihanna assault case, but the judge allowed him to stay in rehab.  He will return to court in Los Angeles on February 28th.
