The Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport welcomes another airline on Thursday.
Start-up PEOPLExpress will begin twice a week non-stop service between New Orleans and the airline's hub at the Newport News/Williamsburg, VA airport.
After the initial flights on Thursday, service will be offered on Wednesdays and Saturdays, arriving from Newport News at 8:00 p.m. and departing New Orleans at 8:45 p.m.
In a press release, the company says introductory fares are available for $99.
“We are very pleased to be on the short list of cities for the restart of this airline,” said Iftikhar Ahmad, New Orleans Director of Aviation. “PEOPLExpress will be a welcomed addition to our family of low-cost carriers that serve New Orleans.”
“The original PEOPLExpress served New Orleans in the 1980s and we’re delighted to return with the same great low fares and convenient non-stop service,” said the airline's CEO Jeff Erickson.
PEOPLExpress offers what it calls "a low-cost, a la carte service model that enables customers to create a customized travel product." That means items like carry-on bags and checked luggage will add additional fees to the base ticket price.
According to the airline's website, a carry-on costs $25. The first checked bag is $20.
A seat assignment, exit row seat, or what PEOPLExpress calls a "Living Large" seat will also cost extra.
While snacks are complementary, drinks run from $1 to $7.
