The latest nominee for membership on a New Orleans-area levee board says he hasn't taken a position on the board's lawsuit against more than 90 oil and gas companies over coastal erosion.
A nominating panel tapped Tyrone Ben for a post on the Southeast Louisiana Flood Protection Authority-East, which filed a lawsuit last year over damage to wetlands that protect New Orleans from hurricanes.
Ben said he was encouraged to apply for the post by Craig Tafarro, who represents Gov. Bobby Jindal's administration on the state coastal restoration board.
Jindal opposes the lawsuit.
Ben says he hasn't spoken to Jindal about the suit and hasn't studied it enough to decide. If approved by Jindal, he would replace lawsuit supporter Tim Doody. Jindal refused to re-appoint Doody, whose term has expired.
